The Insurance Company Building (1926) of arch. Georgi Fingov
Opposite the “Russian Church” is a building with an impressive tower and rich decoration. This is the Insurance Company building (1926) of arch. Georgi Fingov.
The building was built in 1926 for the Officials’ Cooperative Savings Insurance Company, in which the members of the Board of Directors were some of Bulgaria’s most prominent personalities and politicians. Among them are names such as Kiril Popov, Todor Vlaikov, Andrey Lyapchev.
It is located in close proximity to the Royal Palace, and this is the reason for its imposing appearance. The financing of the construction is undertaken by the Society, and the unique external and internal architecture is assigned to the architectural office of Georgi Fingov, Dimo Nichev and Nikola Yurukov. All the decorative details of the facade and its overall appearance are decided in the late Secession style, whose prominent representative is arch. Fingov.
The molding of the entrances, mansard floor, arched windows, balustrades and main cornice is very impressive. The building is massive, with reinforced concrete slabs and beams. The stairs are also made of reinforced concrete, and the roof structure is wooden with sheet metal covering. All building materials used on the facades and the interior are Bulgarian, but very expensive: marble, wrought iron, stone cladding, wooden panelling, original oak joinery.
It is located in the heart of Sofia at the corner of Georgi Benkovski Street and Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard.
